Marine Conservation Fine Art Print– ‘Tara Iti Counted Blue’
This print is inspired by the Tara Iti (NZ Fairy Tern) which nests on shorelines around the Hauraki Gulf. The critically-endangered tara iti population has fewer than 40 adult birds left and just a handful of breeding sites remaining, hence the number 40 in this image. The tiny population is gravely threatened by introduced predators and disturbance or encroachment by humans. Weather conditions (more storms) and fish stocks also affect their plight. Tara Iti will also abandon nests if disturbed by aircraft. New air space rules have been designed to reduce this effect but are being breached. The Department of Conservation (DoC) are monitoring nests, and nest building materials (shell) have been placed near nesting sites to boost breeding.
