Marine Conservation Fine Art PrintPetrel Nets Blue

This print is inspired by Tāiko, (Black Petrel) and reflects the declining numbers of the bird due to commercial fishing bycatch. The black petrel is mainly seen in the outer Hauraki Gulf. Generally solitary at sea, the tāiko often feeds in small groups associated with dolphins and whales or following fishing vessels. There is a colony of Tāiko on Hauturu/Little Barrier (a legally protected reserve and predator free island), so the birds are not in danger from feral pigs, cats, rats and kiore. Mitigation to reduce seabird bycatch has been put in place on commercial fisheries vessels operating within New Zealand, but with clever measures more can be done.
