Marine Conservation Fine Art Print– ‘Bryde’s Whale Cityscape’
This print is based on the magnificent Tohorā (Bryde’s Whale). I imagine it swimming in the waters near our city, Auckland, in the Hauraki Gulf and how we humans share its home. What if the whales’ needs came first? The polluting city here is seen below, changing the order of things. Resident Tohorā are found year-round in the Hauraki Gulf, frequently seen off Tiritiri Matangi and Waiheke Islands. They spend most of their time within shallow water levels and in prime spots, heightening their risk of being stuck by ships. Whale researchers from Auckland University worked with Ports of Auckland to lower speed limits of ships to 10 kn within the Gulf. This lower speed limit has greatly reduced the chance of whales killed by ship strike and is a great example of scientists working with industry to achieve common goals of whale protection.
